Juneteenth has been celebrated recently throughout the United States, but originally the date was significant only to Texans, as it marked the day that African Americans in Texas were told that slavery was over by Major General Granger. This book is a collection of essays written by Annette Gordon-Reed; a woman with a unique history, and with deep family roots in Texas. Gordon-Reed explains both the history of the state and her own personal experiences being a black girl growing up in the 1960s integration era.I actually learned quite a bit by reading this book, as there was much about the history of Texas that I wasn't familiar with; especially as it pertained to Mexico's conflict with early Anglo settlers over the institution of slavery. Texas actually has a pretty complicated history, and as Gordon-Reed points out, the huge influence of slavery is often glossed over in the story of the fight for independence in Texas. I feel like this information is still not really adequately explained in many schools, partly because the horrors of slavery are too uncomfortable to discuss.This was easy to read, and fairly short, at only 150 pages in six chapters. It inspired me to do more research on my own, as I was surprised at how much information was new to me. I appreciate the author for sharing a part of their life, and even more importantly, for shining a light on these events in history that many people might not be aware of. Annette Gordon-Reed's insightful collection of six essays about Texas' complex history of African Americans spanning from the 1500s to the lifetime of the author provides critical contexts to the problems imposed by slavery and its lasting repercussions both upon Texas and the United States. Well documented and written in an engaging style, this work encapsulates essential viewpoints needed in our national retrospective of American life, culture, history, and combined soul.Each essay has a different tone and subject emphasis.
